Decoding Phonography is grounded in the idea that any sound encountered in the environment is a musical idea in itself. The sounds we encounter in everyday life (sounds of nature, cities, animals and machines, and sounds of speech) may occur without a musical purpose but The Luna Ensemble and the commissioned composers regard them as prime material for making music. The pitches, rhythms, dynamics, density, timbres and other musical characteristics of such sounds are a starting point for compositional development and instrumentation.

The Luna Ensemble is an electro-acoustic ensemble consisting of seven members dedicated to the creation and performance of contemporary music that translates everyday environmental-sounds into music through experimental notation, extended instrumental techniques, improvisational strategy, and electronically manipulated field recordings.  Their music exists at an intersection of musique concrète, spectralism, improvisation and American experimentalism.

Performing members include: Rachel Condry (clarinets), Nava Dunkelman (percussion), Christopher Luna (piano/keyboards), Aaron Oppenheim (electronics), Crystal Pascucci (cello), Jakob Pek (electric guitar), Jeanie-Aprille Tang (electronics), and Jennifer Wilsey (percussion).
