ITALIAN SURF ACADEMY makes an unannounced pitstop in Berkeley on its international tour ...
in a double bill with the Bay Area’s own IBIM LAB

1st set:
NYC guitarist Marco Cappelli (originally from Naples, Italy) leads a trio of whizbang Italian instrumentalists, plus VJ, in a set of freewheeling and irreverent arrangements of '60s Italian film music - spaghetti western, noir, horror and crime film scores by Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, Carlo Rustichelli, Riz Ortolani, Piero Umiliani and Armando Trovajoli. Cappelli and his bandmates are the kind of 21st Century musicians who devour intricately composed material in all kinds of genres, and can also improvise, and shred, like the world is ending. Midway through a tour that has brought them to China, Japan and both coasts of the US, the trio+ visits Berkeley for special unannounced show in between tour dates.

Marco Cappelli, electric guitar

“Think of Italian guitarist Marco Cappelli’s ITALIAN SURF ACADEMY as a mixture of Dick Dale and John Zorn, or perhaps a far-out musical crossbreeding of the Ventures with a mind-blowing, avant-garde jazz education. Whether you’re touring the seaside cobblestone streets of Calabria via Vespa scooter or surfing the swells of Manhattan Beach, balance is crucial. And in this heady amalgam of 1950s and ’60s American surf rock, psychedelia and folkloric Italian melodies, Cappelli and his Italian Surf Academy have embraced that concept wholeheartedly” - Downbeat Magazine
