Shanna Sordahl
Shanna Sordahl is an American-Canadian sound artist/composer/performer/collaborator living in Oakland, CA. Her interdisciplinary interests and love of diversity cause her work to take on many forms, from composition and live performances to site-specific installations. Shanna’s multifaceted background allows multiple streams of influence to seep into each of her projects. The fusion of acoustic instruments and sounds with an electronic music approach infuses and shapes her work. This has given her a particular awareness of sound and timbre that she strives to re-contextualize in new ways. Her development with the cello is strongly effected by her approach to timbre, layers and form as influenced through composing from an electronic music standpoint. In addition, the structure, detail and physicality of playing the cello have completely altered the way she approaches electronic composition and her improvisation style in general.
Shanna has an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College, where she focused on digital and analog synthesis, installation work, cello improvisation and audio engineering. She also holds a BA in music from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario where her concentration included both electroacoustic music and religious studies. She has studied composition with Laetitia Sonami, Chris Brown, James Fei, and Matt Rogalsky and studies cello with Joan Jeanrenaud. Shanna’s work has been presented at the 2013 International SuperCollider Convention, and she has performed and worked with a variety of composers and artists including Trimpin, Wrekmeister Harmonies, and Alvin Lucier. As an audio and live-sound engineer, she has worked with many Bay Area musicians and groups of many styles including free improvisation, contemporary classical, and avant garde rock.
Currently Shanna teaches in the Interactive Audio program at Ex’pression College and is active as an independent Audio Engineer. She is also in the process of developing workshops in electronic music, experimental sound and improvisation for children. She plays with and is a founding member of the groups Talk More, ZE BIB! and Very Understanding.

Amma Ateria
[AMMA ATERIA] (fl(amma)ble m(ateria)l is [Jeanie-Aprille Tang], is an audio visual artist + electro-acoustic composer/improviser. Born in Hong Kong, she gravitates to rhythms of construction sites, roaming traffic, inaudible conversations, and airplanes. Natural and synthetic worlds are the polar opposites in her sonic practice. Sounds that distort the cognition of natural occurrences, such as the eruption of wind, metal, water, and the sounds of underwater movements, collide with the velocity, frequencies, timbres, pitches, distances, and rhythms of metallic constructions, motors, and speech. Volume, as in amplitude (loudness), versus volume, as in mass (size). A former student of behavioral science, her practice in sound consists of cross-modal synesthetic influences from the contemporary moment, as well as synopsis and identity assignments from geometric perspectives. With field recordings of different environments, the illusion of spaces, unnatural entering, exiting, and transitions are created, with modulations and blending of synthetic timbre and frequencies. Her instrument is a collection of individual acoustic objects and electronic hardware. With an acoustic approach of mental and muscle memories in an electro-acoustic setting, coexistence and interference between natural and synthetic sounds are developed at the moment when acoustic sounds are modulated and overlapped with themselves in unstable manners and movements in time. Her interests are slow wave, new colour, irregular heartbeats, and circuitry. Jeanie- Aprille studied at Mills College with focus in music composition, electronic music, hardware instruments, and audio engineering.

Sung Kim
Sung Kim (1975) is an improvisor, sculptor, and an instrument builder born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Washington, DC. In 1989, Kim studied ceramic sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art. It was at Corcoran that Kim started building his own variations of the guitar.
Kim received his BFA in sculpture from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. It was in Chicago where Kim began to deviate from the guitar to explore other techniques, tonalities, and sympathetic resonance. It was also in Chicago where Kim started his collaboration with musicians to explore his instruments in an improvisational context. Kim facilitates his musical and sculptural endeavors by owning and operating an architectural woodworking design/build studio in the San Francisco Bay Area.
