Rachel Austin’s aim as a vocal improviser is split between two bipolar judgements:
a. to playplayplay
b. to seek the Sublime through narrative* in the shapes created by sound
A songwriter, performance artist and electronic composer, she has toured and recorded throughout Europe and the US. She taught voice and performance at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen's University Belfast and is currently studying at Mills College in Oakland.
She has performed with others.
People like:
Okkyung Lee, Ellen Waterman, Maria Chavez, Bourne Davis Kane, Tom Arthurs, Simon Rose,
maybe you (since you are here)
etc etc etc
and is set to perform with Fred Frith in various upcoming shows. Much to her surprise, Austin’s recent work has taken a more sublime bent with impulses toward computer interventions, narrative, noisenoisenoise and movement. Play, humour, the sublime, beauty... these [in- or de-]form her narratives.
