Kathy Kennedy + Festival of Stillness

Kathy Kennedy is a musician and sound artist recently relocated to Montreal from the Bay Area. Trained as a classical singer, she has survived and managed to make innovative works with the voice and various technological devices, such as cell phones and pirate radio. Having recently lost everything in a house fire, she will obviously be performing completely new work.

Festival of Stillness is an acoustic duo launched by composer and writer Merlin Coleman. Together with accompanist Dan Cantrell, they create a full flavored blend of vocals and instrumentation influenced by early European music, Eastern European folk, Gamelan, lullabies, free improvisation, and vocal instrumentation. Merlin's songs and poetic creations exhibit a surreal interweaving of textures, themes, and images using a unique and compelling combination of voice, cello, accordion, and musical saw.

Merlin Coleman, composing primarily for cello and voice, has developed a unique style of text using a surreal and theatrical interplay of image rich language and sound. In her work, language is presented primarily in a non-linear manner, performances or soundscapes where song, gibberish, and unknown dialects meld to help tell a story. Currently, she has been composing a series of songs for cello and voice which she performs simultaneously in a mix of styles and genres.
