The renowned gospel-spirituals-jazz-vocalist Baomi Butts, West African master drummer C. K. Ladzekpo, Philippine kulintang master Danongan Kalanduyan, guzheng artist Weihua Zhang, woodwind instrumentalist Masaru Koga, and Native American cedar flutist and vocalist John-Carlos Perea.
This evening of Jazz will explore the meaning of life, death, spirituality, and transcendance in our human condition, expressed through the ancient and contemporary traditions of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.
Jazz In Flight’s first event of 2003 features the royal hartigan quartet. The group will perform original and historic compositions in the African American tradition. The Quartet adapts elements of world cultures into its playing, including Indian solkattu rhythms and tala (time cycles), Javanese gamelan structures, Philppine kulintang ensemble instruments and timbres, Turkish usul and hand drum techniques, Gaelic bodhran rhythms, Native American songs, West African instruments, melodies, and rhythms, African American clapping plays, camp meeting shouts, and New Orleans rhythms.
