The
John Ingle / Dan Joseph Duoand from San Diego
Christopher Williams contrabass with
Travis Sullivan saxophone
With the unusual instrumentation of alto saxophone and hammer dulcimer, the duo of
John Ingle (sax) and Dan Joseph (hammer dulcimer) offers a unique brand of 21st century other-world music. Influenced by free jazz, minimalism, Indian raga and Middle Eastern modalities, their music combines driving rhythm with complex patterns and improvisation. Unlike anything heard before, this music is entrancing and complex.
Christopher Williams is a composer, contrabassist, and occasional writer originally from San Diego, where he recently received his B.A. at UCSD under the watchful ears of Bertram Turetzky and Chaya Czernowin. He has performed with LaMonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music, Charles Curtis, and variously as a soloist, having premiered works by Benjamin Carson and Christopher Adler; has received performances by NOISE and The Hutchins Consort; awaits publication in _Open Space_ magazine; and will relocate to Barcelona this fall to study composition with John Rahn at La Escola Superior de Musica. He is a member emeritus of 4862 Voltaire St.... currrently thinking about the unfortunate controversy surrounding the production of organic wines in Sonoma County.
Saxophonist, pianist, and composer,
Travis Sullivan came to New York City in 1996 to attend the Master's in Jazz Performance program at Manhattan School of Music. Since then, Travis has been performing throughout the northeast as both a leader and a sideman at venues such as Birdland, The Internet Café, The Knitting Factory, Cornelia St. Café, Kavehaz, Jazz at MOMA, and the Regattabar (Boston, MA). As lead alto saxophonist for Johanna Grussner's Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, Travis has toured Scandinavia and performed at the Alandia Jazz Festival (Finland) and at the legendary jazz club Fasching in Stockholm, Sweden.
Travis has also performed and/or recorded with Clark Terry, the New York Voices, Joey Tempest (of the 80's glam rock band "Europe" (no kidding!)), Jane Monheit, Matt Wilson, Jeff Hirshfield, and George Schuller.
In April 2000, Travis released his first CD as a leader, "As We Speak" (NCM East Green Series), a collection of original jazz compositions performed by his band, Project One. Travis currently resides in NYC leading a number of improvised music ensembles, most notably the trio Anti-Elevator Mission, which has a release scheduled for Fall 2003.
