Jazz In Flight presents:

Gerry Hemingway Quartet

Gerry Hemingway - drums
Ellery Eskelin - tenor saxophone
Mark Dresser - bass
Herb Robertson - trumpet

On October 27th, the Gerry Hemingway Quartet will take the stage, featuring saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, bassist Mark Helias, trumpeter Herb Robertson and Hemingway on drums and percussion. Formed in 1997, the Quartet incorporates shifting personnel from the New York avant scene, drawing upon the wide variety of visionary musicians that have made some of the most exciting music in the last 20 years. The group’s first CD, Johnny’s Corner Song (Auricle Records) was released in 1998 with Eskelin on saxophone. As a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet for 12 years, Hemingway’s contributions to modern improvised music are monumental. Incorporating a wide variety of sounds and percussive techniques that bend the role and timbre of the instrument, Hemingway’s performances are as visual as they are musical, and as emotional as they are abstract. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Hemingway has become increasingly prominent as a solo composer and member of several long standing groups of international acclaim, including BassDrumBone, the Reggie Workman Ensemble and his own Quartet and Quintets. Hemingway has also collaborated with an astonishing array of creative musicians who include Derek Bailey, Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Kenny Wheeler, George Lewis, Marilyn Crispell, and John Cale among many others.
