Wind Trio of Alphaville + Frank Gratkowski

This evening of contemporary jazz features the Wind Trio of Alphaville: Philip Gelb (shakuhachi), Phillip Greenlief (saxophones, clarinet) and Jon Raskin (saxophones), with special guest, Frank Gratkowski (clarinets, saxophones) from Koln, Germany. First, Gratkowski, Greenlief and Raskin will perform original compositions and improvisations in solo, duo and trio formations. For the second set, the Wind Trio of Alphaville will perform a few compositions and also improvise with the great saxophonist from Koln, Frank Gratkowski.

The Wind Trio of Alphaville sports a unique ensemble of winds, which includes the shakuhachi, a rare Japanese wood flute. The group gets their name from the 1965 Godard film about an imaginary totalitarian state (Alphaville) that is run by a computer, a city where art and truth have been outlawed. Bringing many of the film's ideas to their own musical arena, these three highly-talented composers and improvisers overthrow the current state of musical technocracy and creative anemia with brave statements of imagination.

Frank Gratkowski has performed in jazz festivals across Europe and teaches saxophone at various music conservatories in Germany.

This show funded in part by a generous grant from the Zellerbach Family Foundation.

Cost: $6-$10
