About the some of the performers:
Seth Augustus:
"I started learning Tuvan style Throatsinging in 1998 under the mentorship of Paul Pena and got to study with most every Tuvan that came through San Francisco thereafter. Paul has also taught me alot about Guitar, Singing, Blues and Music in general. I went to Tuva in August of 2000 with Lemon DeGeorge and got my first Igil - studied Igil and Throatsinging there with
Yvgene Kuular & Mongoun-ol Ondar. In 2000, after returning from Tuva, I was invited by Jolie Holland to be in 'Little Boris & the Shoes' and played with her, Dave Mihaly, Brian Miller and various guests for over 2 years. In 2001 Paul Pena asked me to take him around the country for a small tour - as his tour manager - occasionally he brought me up on stage to perform. I've also benefitted from studying throatsinging with: Huun-Huur-Tu, Igor Koshkendey & Aldar Tamdyn (of Chirgilchin), Sasha Bapa (producer of Chirgilchin and Pure Nature Music) and Steve Sklar, founder of IAHS. More recently, I've been performing in San Francisco on my own and occasionally will sit in on Igil with SF Jazz luminaries, Mushroom.
I just completed a month-long (September '04) artist-in-residency at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco - as part of their Asia Alive ! program. I demonstrated Tuvan Throatsinging and played songs on the Igil and Doshpuluur. "

Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment
Zoyres is:
Mike Perlmutter - alto saxophone
Josh Sirotiac - tuba
Olivier Hamant - clarinet and bass clarinet
Liam Staskawicz - trombone
Dave Mairs - drums
"Zoyres" is an orthographical alteration of the Yiddish work "zoyers" which refers to "sours" - soured vegetables (like pickles and sourkraut) that are common to Eastern European food. These foods not only cross borders, but represent organic change, ferment, somewhat akin to Zoyres' music, which has also made its way across borders and has been transformed through
the filter of the band's aesthetics and culture. The music's roots are still recognizeable, but so is the transformation into something new (much in the same way that a pickled cucumber is visually recongizeable as a cucumber, but is quite different to the taste buds).
Mike Perlmutter for solo saxophones. This set will synthesize various extended techniques with more traditional approaches to melodic and rhythmic composition.
