“Truly inspired.” –San Francisco Bay Guardian
Since 1998,
John Ingle (San Francisco) and Dan Joseph (New York) have been developing a unique style of pattern-based improvisation and collaborative composition. With the unusual instrumentation of alto saxophone and hammer dulcimer, their music is built upon fixed modes and simple melodic patterns from which they develop and improvise their collaborative works. With a sound combining elements of minimalism, free jazz and Indian raga, they have developed a devoted following in the Bay Area where their collaboration began. They have appeared at New Langton Arts, the Headlands Center for the Arts, the Berkeley Arts Center, Knitting Factory Los Angeles, Roulette (NYC) and others. Their first CD trancepatterns recorded at Boomtown in Sausalito, also includes live concert recordings with guests India Cooke, violin, and Miya Masaoka, laser-koto. Available from the Deep Listening Catalog.
Ron Heglin is a Trombonist and Vocalist working with extended technique on the Trombone and with spoken and sung imaginary languages as a Vocalist. His vocal music has been influenced by his study of North Indian vocal music. He works both compositionally and in an improvisational mode and is a founding member of the groups MUSIC FOR ALL OCCASIONS, ROTODOTI, and BRASSIOSAURUS. He has also performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Leo Smith, Henry Brant, Logos Duo, Tim Perkis, John Bischoff, Tom Djll and Toyoji Tomita.
Tom Nunn has designed, built and performed with original musical instruments since 1975, having received a B.Mus. and M.A. in music composition from the University of Texas at Austin and S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook. His instruments typically utilize commonly available materials, are sculptural in appearance, utilize contact microphones for amplification, and are designed specifically for improvisation with elements of ambiguity, unpredictability and nonlinearity. In addition to the more than 50 instruments he has made, Tom has published a book, WISDOM OF THE IMPULSE: ON THE NATURE OF FREE IMPROVISATION. Tom has also written a number of articles about the use of experimental instruments and improvisation in publications such as EXPERIMENTAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, MUSICWORKS and LEONARDO.
