Earthen Sea:
Jacob Long returns to the west coast with his unique and powerful guitar works. Playing a $25 yard sale guitar with an ebow and two looping pedals, he patiently builds massive, subtly-layered sound worlds out of only a few melodic ideas. Comparissons can be made to Fripp & Eno collaborations and early Terry Riley solo works, but while the sonic vocabulary may be related, the music is completely personal. Deep.
Holy Matrimony:
Formerly billed under his own name, this is the solo project from former Black Eyes guitarist Daniel Martin-McCormick. Incorporating a wide range of instruments, Holy Matrimony explores the intersection of musical ferocity and cathardic liberation. Guitar, voice, drum, organ, sony walkman, mixing board, delay, distortion, flanger and junk collide, scatter and reassemble at higher volume.
51717:
Lili Schulder, a recent transplant to the west coast, has been developing a repertoire of warm, woozy lullabyes as 51717 using Mbira (aka thumb piano), voice and computer. Arthur Russel by way of Java? Maybe... Intimate, floating and hypnotic; sounds flowing like a river through the room; as if hearing music in your sleep.
Three exciting newcomers to San Francisco.
