California-born, Amsterdam-based Jodi Gilbert is a remarkable improvising vocalist with a penchant for exploring new possibilities for the voice. In a review of her CD The Voice is the Matter (Ramboy), The Wire magazine wrote, "on one track Jodi Gilbert lends her voice to a traditional Appalachian number. On others she sings Macedonian and Bulgarian folksongs, and the Irish air 'My Lagan Love.' Elsewhere she scats in sub-Shelly Hirsch mode." Gilbert's ensemble includes Kanoko Nishi (koto), Jen Baker (trombone), Jon Leidecker (electronics), and Richard Saunders (bass).
shudder is an electro-acoustic trio with
Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds),
Kyle Bruckmann (oboe, English horn), and Lance Grabmiller (laptop) that shows the "right" way to integrate electronics and acoustic instruments in small ensemble improvisation. Intuitive, vast dynamic ranges, great players.
