Thursday, April 13 Live Jazz - One East, Two West 8PM, $6-10
One East, 2 West is two sets of live jazz by hot young players: Bill McHenry (saxophones) from New York, and locals Devin Hoff (bass) and
Scott Amendola (drums). New York Times critic Ben Ratliff writes about Bill McHenry : "Any musician who works so effectively against a common language, and uses cliché so little in the process, is worth listening to. There are tons of young jazz saxophonists out there pursuing ideas of harmony and structure and rhythm, but he has something rare going for him. He has a sound."
Music writer Derk Richardson's oft-quoted observation that "If
Scott Amendola didn't exist the San Francisco music scene would have to invent him," is more true than ever. But what's become evident in recent years is that the extraordinarily resourceful drummer has evolved into a paragon of self-invention, a bandleader, composer and invaluable creative collaborator at the center of a vast array of improvisational ensembles.
Devin Hoff has played everything from small punk shows to major jazz festivals internationally, and has appeared on numerous recordings. He also writes music, teaches music, and organizes and performs at benefits for a variety of progressive causes. Hoff performs with jazz and jazz-influenced groups Nels Cline Singers and Good For Cows, as well as with rock groups, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle and Xiu Xiu.
Cost: $6-10
