Films by Maya Deren and David Michalak, live Soundtracks by REEL CHANGE - Andrew Voigt, David Michalak, Tom Nunn and Carla Kihlstedt

Tonight features screenings of Maya Deren’s, Meshes In The Afternoon and At Land with new live soundtracks by REEL CHANGE. Meshes In The Afternoon her most well known film, establishes an atmosphere saturated in paranoia and distrust with lovers turning into killers and with the presence of a mysterious but fascinating hooded figure. The other half of the show will feature REEL CHANGE performing live soundtracks for films by Bay Area filmmaker David Michalak.

Maya Deren made films in the 1940s and screened them on her living room walls to interested audiences. Her aim was to inspire a new generation of avant-garde filmmakers. She wrote film theory, distributed her own movies and traveled across the U.S. to promote them. She was a director, dancer, writer, editor, cinematographer and pioneer in experimental filmmaking. Deren use to say that her films cost what Hollywood spends on lipstick.

David Michalak has made over 50 films since 1973. They range from stark expressionistic dramas to abstract moving paintings to spoken word films that comically appropriate “How to” & Instructional records as part of the dialogue.
Tonight’s show features, See What You See, a film that explores the paintings of the late Ben Lindgren plus others.
