New York City’s The Four Bags make their west coast debut, celebrating the release of their third recording, “Live at Barbes” for NCM East Records.
Combining the vibrancy of modern jazz and popular music with the sophistication of a classical chamber group, The Four Bags feature a captivating blend of Trombone (Brian Drye), Accordion (Jacob Garchik), Guitar (Sean Moran) and Woodwinds (Mike McGinnis), an astonishing array of tonal colors, mind-bending improvisations, and covers ranging from Schoenberg to 30’s Brazil.
"The instrumental palette of this collaborative quartet - trombone, accordion, guitar and reeds – creates the impression of a contemporary chamber jazz; so does the repertory, which includes arrangements of Chopin and Brian Wilson, along with thoughtful original compositions." - The New York Times
The Four Bags performed at Symphony Space's Wall-to-Wall Joni Mitchell marathon concert, a tribute to Burt Bacharach at Lincoln Center, the annual concert of the Friends of Alec Wilder at St. Peter's Church, the "Celebrate Brooklyn!" festival in Prospect Park, and the "Next Next" festival at BAM Cafe. In December of 2003, they presented a concert of originals as well as a new take on the music of Alec Wilder at the Symphony Space Thalia Theater. During 2002, The Four Bags made a tour of Japan, making numerous appearances in new music venues, schools and festival stages, as well as appearing on a NHK national television. The Four Bags have been featured on National Public Radio member station WNYC, appearing on "Spinning on Air" hosted by David Garland, and on John Schaeffer's "Soundcheck.”
“The music they make is wonderfully difficult to define, easy to enjoy “
– David Garland, WNYC
