Slammin the Infinite is fast becoming one of the premiere ensembles in new music. Since it’s inception in December, 2003, it has toured Europe, Canada and the U.S. multiple times bringing its exciting sound and other worldly musical dimensions to critical acclaim and wowiing audiences with its intensity and magic. The band has performed to standing ovations at the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Kerava Festival (Fiinland), The Rochester Jazz Festival and the Viision Festival, to name a few. It received a travel grant from the NEA in 2006 and with 3 recordings under its belt, the band seems destined to keep making great music and insure its place in the jazz/improvised/new music legacy.
Steve Swell (trombone, leader) www.steveswell.com
A veteran of the groups of Jaki Byard, John Zorn, Tim Berne, William Parker, Buddy Rich, Bill Dixon, Anthoiny Braxton, and Lionel Hampton, and equally at home playing big band swing and improvised music, Steve Swell has been lauded by many of the world's foremost critics and was the subject of features in Downbeat and Signal To Noise earlier this year.
Sabir Mateen (reeds) www.sabirmateen.com
Multi-reedist SABIR MATEEN got his start playing with Horace Tapscott in the Pan-Afrikan People’s Orchestra and has come to be regarded as one of New York's foremost reeds players. In the nearly thirty years since, he has played with panoply of jazz luminaries including Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray, Butch Morris and in perhaps his best-known association, the bassist William Parker. He currently is a part of TEST, and leads his own Shapes, Textures and Sounds Ensemble (which also features Swell)
Matthew Heyner (bass)
Bassist Matthew Heyner is the youngest of the group, but brings unquestioned chops to the table. His work with TEST, Eye Contact, Cold Bleak Heat (with Paul Flaherty, Chris Corsano and Greg Kelley) and (most notably) No-Neck Blues Band has made him one of the most in-demand bassists in New York City today. He has also played with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and the singer Samara Lubelski.
Michael Wimberly (drums)
Having worked with David Murray, Charles Gayle, Steve Coleman, D'Angelo, Mr. Wimberly is at home in a variety of musical settings. A versatile artist, he has also worked composing with modern dacne companies such as Alvin Ailey, Urban Bush Women and Forces of Nature. His discography also includes work with Roy Campbell, Jr., and Oluyemi Thomas.
Cost: $10 - $15
