Myra Melford - Marty Ehrlich Duo & Trio M
Featuring Mark Dresser, Matt Wilson, Marty Ehrlich and Myra Melford

"...a strikingly facile technique with a passionate, imaginative improvisational ability." Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

At the keyboard, Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India, and blends them with the rangy, percussive avant-garde stylings she cultivated in studies with Don Pullen and Henry Threadgill. This double bill will feature a performance by the duo, Trio M as well as a performance with all musicians on stage together. The collaborative duo of Melford and Ehrlich (leader of the Dark Woods Ensemble and Traveler's Tales and a member of Melford's Extended Ensemble) explores their concepts of composition and improvisation in an intimate setting in which ideas and feelings are freely shared and musical boundaries ignored. They explore a wide ranging repertoire that draws from blues, soul, jazz standards, and pieces conceived for their ensembles, scaled down for their one-on-one dialogues. They play Yoshi’s San Francisco in support of their new releases.
