OAKLAND ACTIVE ORCHESTRA
BASSHATERS
NELSON / SMITH / WALTER

The Oakland Active Orchestra is a brand spanking new large group consisting of some of the finest improvisers and composers in the bay area creative music scene. The OAO performs compositions written by group members, with healthy doses of improvisation thrown in. Though the lineup will expand, the inaugural concert features:

Philip Greenlief: alto saxophone
Matt Nelson: tenor saxophone
Aram Shelton: soprano saxophone / Bb clarinet
Cory Wright: baritone saxophone / bass clarinet
Tom Djill: trumpet
Darren Johnston: trumpet
Rob Ewing: trombone
Kristian Aspelin: guitar
Lisa Mezzacappa: bass
Damon Smith: bass
Jordan Glenn: drums & percussion
Weasel Walter: drums & percussion

Basshaters is the duo of Tony Dryer and Jacob Felix-Heule.A drum and double bass duo that bridges the gap between acoustic free improv and electronic noise. Fascinated by the physicality of their instruments, Basshaters enjoys working with a multitude of sounds and techniques exploiting the vast possibilities available for activating large resonant bodies. The duo seeks directness and intensity in execution. Subtleties emerge from the bold statement of simple ideas.

Nelson / Smith / Walter is an improvised trio made up of Matt Nelson on tenor saxophone, Damon Smith on bass, and Weasel Walter on drums. Word had it that their first meeting was excessively brutal.
