Fri 10/7 8:00 PM Hertz Hall [UC Berkeley College & Bancroft]
David Milnes leads the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Gyorgy Ligeti's seminal orchestral work, "Atmospheres" (1961). Although a bit lacking compared to his later works from that period, "Atmospheres" contains Ligeti's signature textures, extreme pitch ranges, and complex clouds of instrumental timbres. If that isn't enough, the orchestra presents two other 20th century classics: Edgar Varese's "Arcana" and Maurice Ravel's "Daphnis and Chloe". A challenging program for any orchestra, these young players' enthusiasm will most likely make up for any lack of experience!

Physicist and Composer Dr. Brian Holmes and Soprano Sheri Greenawald, Director of the San Francisco Opera Center explore how the art and science of singing combine in opera. How do opera singers sing loud enough to be heard over an orchestra? Can an opera singer’s voice really break a wine glass? What's the difference between a baritone and a soprano? Discover the answers to these questions — and more — in this presentation for the whole family. This event is the latest in a string of collaborations between the Exploratorium and the San Francisco Opera, prompted by the staging of John Adams' "Dr. Atomic."

MODULAR SET "Beached on the Half Landing" CD Release Show w/BLACK FICTION & P.A.F
"Sonic explorers by nature and rooted in improvisation, these multi-instrumentalists take the torch from early pioneers such as Sun Ra, This Heat, and Can and run along side of more modern magicians such as Nels Cline, Animal Collective, Acid Mothers Temple and Jacki-O-Motherfucker. Heavy use of pedals, loopers and analog syths create warm atmospheres of color. The results can become many things; beautiful sonic textures, prog-like riffs, epic sonic crescendos, ambient raga drones, avant-jazz grooves, an endless array of sound and beauty."
