Thu 6/5 8:00 PM MACLA Theater Space [510 South First St San Jose]

Thursday, June 5 - 8 p.m. // Friday. June 6 - 8 p.m. // Saturday, June 7 - 4 and 6 p.m.

In Flock, music notation, electronic sound, and video animation are all generated in real time based on the locations of musicians, dancers, and audience members as they move and interact with each other. Computer vision software analyzes video from an overhead camera to determine the location of each participant, and this data is used to create music notation for four jazz saxophonists, to render a three-dimensional video animation, and to generate an electronic soundtrack. By inviting the audience to help create the unique music and visuals for each performance, Flock seeks to reconcile concert performance with the dynamics of collaborative creation, multi-player games, and social networks to create an engaging live event.

Thu 6/5 8:00 PM The Hillside Club [2286 Cedar St, Berkeley, CA 94708]
The Sixth Annual Matthew Sperry Memorial Festival, featuring John Butcher. This is the first evening of music in honor of bassist Sperry, and it features English saxophonist John Butcher, who he frequently collaborated with. Butcher is one of the most innovative improvisers on the scene today, utilizing multiphonics, upper register playing, and feedback.

Fri 6/6 8:00 PM The Hillside Club [2286 Cedar St, Berkeley, CA 94708]
The Sixth Annual Matthew Sperry Memorial Festival, featuring Carla Kihlstedt. This is the second evening of music in honor of bassist Sperry, and it features violinist Carla Kihlstedt, who he frequently collaborated with. Carla's resume reads like a Who's Who of contemporary artists, and she's equally adept at playing fully notated concert music as she is belting it out and playing in a progressive rock band.
