Nathan Clevenger TRIO w/
Jordan Glenn &
Cory WrightOakland musicians
Nathan Clevenger (piano/harmonium),
Jordan Glenn (drums/vibes), and
Cory Wright (clarinet/tenor sax) share a long and entwined history of collaboration across various projects, including Wiener Kids, Ashen Cleric, and Fellow Hominids. Formed in 2021, the trio has released 2 albums -- Late Arcade and Sunken Reliquary, and recently initiated a series of collaborations with guests, including
Kasey Knudsen,
Crystal Pascucci, and Safa Shokrai. Working from and against Clevenger's compositional frames and utilizing the multi-instrumental flexibility of each player, the trio weaves between non-idiomatic improvisation and often gnomic composed material, with a focus on spaciousness, abstract harmony, and timbral detail.
Each member of The Scriveners (
Myles Boisen - guitar, Tim Rowe - drums, Safa Shokrai - bass) brings decades of experience in free improv to their performances, as well as significant time served in jazz, punk, and all manner of popular and unpopular musics. The collective result (so far) is a music that is attentive to the tiniest sonic details as well as larger formal structures, often spacious, sometimes tuneful without apology. Cinematic soundscapes shift into compositional constraint, then jump cut to deconskronkted beats for a minute.
COVID still hasn't gone away, so we have to make some accomodations to it. Seating will be strictly limited -- we may have to turn you away if we fill our (reduced) capacity. You must be vaccinated against COVID, and you must wear a mask while on the premises. We won't have any snacks, because it seems to me like that's incompatible with masking.
