On Sunday, December 15 at 8:00pm, Tom's Place presents
Carmen Quill, solo bass
Brenner/Goldberg Meditations
Nate Brenner, electric bass
Ben Goldberg, clarinet
Tom's Place is happy to play host to Nate Brenner and
Ben Goldberg's Meditations project, and a solo performance by New York-based bassist Carmen Quill.
Since April 2023, Nate and Ben have gathered nearly every week to record duets. Ben says "The music has encompassed us in its power to enlighten, guide, and heal. So we named the project Brenner/Goldberg Meditations. There are many volumes in the archive and like Bob Dylan said 'shall be released.'"
Clarinetist
Ben Goldberg has established himself as "one of the most vibrant, flexible, and inventive clarinetists in jazz and improvised music" (Downbeat). NPR calls Ben "an artist who seems to find beautiful melodies at the end of every path," and The New York Times has noted his music for "a feeling of joyous research into the basics of polyphony and collective improvising." After twice being named Rising Star Clarinetist in the Downbeat Critics Poll, he now consistently places in the top two in the Clarinet category.
Nate Brenner is the bassist for Merrill Garbus's tUnE-yArDs, in addition to his solo project Naytronix and, of course Brenner/Goldberg Meditations.
Carmen Quill is a double bassist, composer, singer and interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She is recognized for her sound and versatility on the double bass, her captivating performances as a solo artist, and her intuitive sensitivity as an improviser. Her debut solo recording, Don't Get Comfy / Nowhere (2020), "thrives on the meeting of reservation and vulnerability, and its songs feel as emotional and virtuosic as a power ballad yet are sparse and withholding as a Rembrandt" (Pitchfork). In addition to producing and performing her solo music she performs and releases music as part of the bands tilt, Scree, and a host of other projects and collaborations.
