Bassist, composer, and teacher James H. Carr performs and teaches bass in the Lexington, KY area. Jim has also taught music theory, music history, and composition and at San Francisco State University, Stanford, and Columbia University. As an electric and upright bassist, Jim has worked and collaborated with many artists, including the pioneering live-electronic/Jazz improvisation ensemble Sonic Wallpaper, Boston Bluegrass stars Spider Bridge, oldies greats The Shirelles and The Platters, and San Francisco Bay Area R&B bands Little Sister and the Bad Intentions, The High Rollers, Shinola, and the Skin Divers. He is currently recording for the Lexington Bluegrass band, “Mama Tried,” the Staunton, VA–based roots band “The Rusticators,” and San Francisco Bay Area flutist/performance artist, Polly Moller. Jim is a member of the Folk Boy Orchestra—the house band at Wood Songs—the Kentucky Theater’s weekly live radio, web, and PBS TV broadcast, hosted by folksinger Michael Jonathon.
Having recently received his BA in Jazz and world music from San Francisco State University, John Moreira continues his studies at both SFSU and U.C. Berkeley as he works towards his Master’s in music history, and a second Bachelor’s in Japanese culture and language. He also studied for some time at Berklee School of music in Boston, and spent his formative years under the mentorship of Bay Area great, guitarist Dave Bernstein. While his interest lies in the improvised musical performance, he continually seeks to expand his influences outside the scope of his formal music training. His sound is essentially the product of his formal music training, and his recent excursions in atonality, with a deep exploration of color.
