Scott Hill
Clarinet, saxophone
Scott Hill earned his degree in music from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he studied both western classical music theory and eastern styles of ensemble music. While jazz improvisation and composition was his main focus, he also performed and composed music for orchestra and contemporary chamber ensemble. After graduating in 1991, he moved to Berkeley to form a band with Bay Area Persian musician Aldoush Alpanian. Aldoush’s first release received SF Chronicle’s Wammie Award for “Best World Music Band” in 1992. In the following years Scott produced several innovative multimedia soundtracks for cdrom company Inverse Ink.. His explorations into improvisational forms continued with the avant-garde electric power trio Three Bean Salad, which in 1994 released their international debut “Legumanity”(XDOT 25). His latest independent release, “Steps”, combines an ambitious improvisational energy with themes from ethnic music around the world. Enlisting a powerful roster of musicians, Scott brings to the fore some of today’s top Bay Area musicians. Drummer Scott Amendola and bassist John Shifflett form the core rhythm section with special guest appearances from Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio), Leonard Thompson, and Aldoush Alpanian.
